The Weekly Digs #24

We’ve had lots of hot 95 degree days happen this week and I’m melting in the garden. Good thing my plants are more resilient than me! My peppers are just loving the heat and I have them tucked under a thick 5 inch layer of mulch so the soil stays cool and moist.

Tomatoes are coming on. Though a bit slower than last year.

Butternut Squash. Growing it up the fence this year.

In the garden:

  • Harvesting tomatoes, peppers, leeks, dried beans, potatoes, cucumbers, onions.

  • Put some shade cloth on my tomatoes to protect the fruit from sun-scald. I had pruned the tomatoes so much because I trimmed off disease. However, there weren’t enough leaves left to protect the tomatoes. My life in the garden right now= tomato disease pruning.

  • Planted yukon gold potatoes in grow bags, and zucchini in a grow bag and a garden bed. Variety- Costata romanesco

In the kitchen:

  • Canned 6 pints salsa. Saved a seventh for the refrigerator because the kids wanted some and it’s already gone!

  • Canned 9 Jars dill pickle chips

  • Dehydrated 5 quarts of leeks

I hope Cameron doesn’t see this picture- he might want me to take it off the blog! Haha! He was helping cut leeks for the dehydrator and man they sting your eyes so much when they are fresh. Swim goggles do the trick to keep the tears at bay!

Cameron has been perfecting his pizzas. It’s so great to have all the toppings right outside in the garden and the best part is the homemade tomato sauce. Yum.
