The Weekly Digs #13

This week we had flooding (not in the garden just locally) and lots of storms and rain. Cameron and I did a late night tomato mulching to prepare for the wet weather. My tomatoes usually get one disease or another by the end of the season so I mulch to try and keep the soil borne diseases at bay for as long as possible.

In the garden:

  • I finally started planting my tomatoes. 6 indeterminate tomatoes in my garden bump out area. Cherokee Purple, Kelloggs Breakfast, Bing Cherry, Sun Gold, Purple Russian, and Egg Yolk.

  • 15 Determinate Romas got planted in the larger garden. I still have about 15 left to find a place to plant haha!

  • Zinnias got transplanted.

  • I also transplanted my 2 jalapeno plants and direct seeded about four more. I’ve never direct seeded peppers before so that will be experimental. I attempted to start lots of jalapenos indoors but had a terrible germination rate. I finally figured the seed must be bad and ordered a new packet. Hopefully, I’ll have them sprout outdoors! Also, I’m hoping it will be enough for salsa when the tomatoes are ready!

  • We’ve been harvesting kale, arugula, spinach, herbs, asparagus, green onions, and finally our first few radishes.

Indoor Seed Starting:

  • The majority of the seeds I planted just one week ago in the 2 inch soil blocks (my experiment) have sprouted. My kids already took some of the sunflowers to plant in their kids garden. I’m actually really happy with how my experiment is turning out so far! Even the sunflowers which don’t usually transplant well have had no problem adjusting.

  • The only negative is my adult chickens which I let free range, decided to jump up and walk all over my seed starting table. I had a few soil block casualties.

In the Kitchen:

  • I pressure canned 3 quart jars of chicken bone broth

  • We got a new kitchen gadget, a pasta machine (thank you Amy!) and it was so much easier than hand rolling the pasta.

  • I’ve been having fun taking pictures of our seasonal meals each night. Having photos of each meal we’ve made will help give me ideas when that season rolls around again!
