The Weekly Digs #21

The harvest is increasing and I’m so excited! I love this time of year! I’m always surprised at how much the kids eat from the garden on a daily basis. It’s a good problem to have, but I keep telling Cameron we need more acres and space to grow if we are going to keep up with the appetites of the kids.

The other day I harvested 10 cucumbers in the morning and the kids ate every single one by dinner!

In the garden:

  • Planted beans. The kids planted some more in their garden too. Varieties were a mixture of fresh and dried beans. Fresh- gold rush, royal burgundy, and calima. For dried beans- Quincy pinto bean, Silver Cloud Cannellini, Oje de Tigre, and Good Mother Stallard

  • Harvesting a few more cherry tomatoes, sungold is always our first to produce. Also, cucumbers, bulb fennel, blackberries, blueberries, green beans, green and banana peppers.

  • Tomatoes have early blight because of all the rain. I’ve been working on clipping diseased leaves to keep them in check.

In the kitchen:

  • Cameron took some of the kids and pick three more gallons of blueberries I weighed them and it was 21 lbs. I froze 2 gallons worth and the other gallon got eaten fresh and make into homemade popsicles.

  • I also picked another 2 lbs of blueberries from my own garden and dehydrated those.

  • Made and froze some pesto
