The Weekly Digs #95
In the garden:
We found a trap that is catching the voles! I was very skeptical when Cameron brought home a trap built for rats. I wasn’t sure if it was going to cross over and work for the voles since the traditional mouse traps didn’t work at all.

But they work great! We’ve caught three voles already within a couple days. The traps won out over letting nature balance naturally over time. I have really been wanting to get some more crops in the ground but was worried about the voles. Cameron bought the traps from Tractor Supply, HERE is a link.
Last week I mentioned I made some seed starting mix, I just finished the video for that, it can be found HERE.
I added some more hairy vetch seed and started to lay compost over the top. My hope is that it will germinate soon and take off in spring. I was reading in THIS BOOK that planting hairy vetch before a crop of tomatoes will help lower chances of disease in the tomatoes.
I have followed hairy vetch cover crops with a tomato crop in the past. I didn’t notice the disease prevention as much but now that I think back on it, it did help. Hairy vetch also adds nitrogen and keeps the plants well fed. No need to add additional fertilizers.

I ordered some more fruit trees this week.
- Era RedLove Apple
- Akane Apple
- Shin Li Asian Pear
- Large Korean Asian Pear
I like to order the majority of my fruit trees from Stark Bros, but I have a friend who recommended One Green World for some more unusual varieties. I purchased these from One Green World.
House Progress:
The roof is finished! It is such a relief to finally have that done. After the inspector comes out again, they will move on to insulation and sheet rock.
Our back doors and one more window is in the back wall. The door will be painted black to match the windows.
Cam and I are finalizing cabinet plans this weekend.
