The Weekly Digs #194

The Weekly Digs are back! I pressed pause on them back in December due to the lack of things going on here on the homestead to write about on a weekly basis, and because of Christmas and an upcoming vacation. Now that those things are all over, and we are officially in February, things are picking up again!

I also should announce on here, since maybe some of you don’t get on Youtube, that we are expecting a baby in June. We know the gender, but I have an upcoming ultrasound this week and will get that triple confirmed, then share it here 🙂 

Weather Woes

We started out the week with a severe ice/ sleet storm that pretty much shut down the town! All roads were a sheet of ice and from what I’ve heard there were several accidents. We couldn’t make it out of our driveway, so we hunkered down at home.

It was nice because Cam could work from home and my oldest who went back to public school this year, had Monday- Friday with no in person school. The first day was fun but by the end, it was a true test of my patience. It was different with all kids home and not being able to do much of anything outside 🙂 But we made it.

I told Cam I would have loved every second if I could have been out in the garden the whole time. Unfortunately, it was also under a sheet of ice and even my tunnel was sealed shut the first few days so that wasn’t an option.

In the Garden

This week in the garden, we started our first set of seeds in soil blocks.

• Onions: Rossa Di Milano, Evergreen Hardy, Patterson, and Australian Brown
• Celery: Tango
• Cilantro: Caribe 
• Kale: Meadowlark

I started the onions indoors on Wednesday and then moved them out to my tunnel by Friday. I didn’t want them to sprout with the house heat so I set them in the garage until I could get into my caterpillar tunnel. 

I love doing seeds outdoors because they sprout naturally when the weather is right. On Friday, I made more soil blocks and planted celery, kale, and cilantro.

Today we have been working on weeding the tunnel and feeding the chickweed to the chickens. They have been loving the fresh greens. 

Seed Planning

A friend of mine recently told me about a new seed planning online program. As someone who has gardened for a while, I found I wasn’t all that interested because I’m pretty set in my ways and my method was working just fine.

I decided to swallow my pride and give it a shot and after watching all the videos and figuring out how it all worked, I LOVED it. Well at least, I’m loving it so far. I have a feeling it’s going to be a huge game changer for me this year since each week I can print out the list of tasks I have for the garden.

Garden Plans

I’ve been working on wrapping up the garden plans for 2023. I’ve tried super hard to scale back, because of the upcoming baby arrival, but when I look at it, it doesn’t seem like I’ve knocked enough off the list. No photo yet…

I hope to get a digital version made and share it on a separate blog post next week! 

Also I will be sharing more info on garden plans, seed planning, and goals for this year in an upcoming Youtube video.
