The Weekly Digs #221

In the Garden

I finally was able to share what we’ve been working on behind the scenes, a high tunnel! I started to plant things in it last week.

We planted broccoli (green magic), kale (white russian, I think), cabbages (golden acre), and lettuce (winter density).

Then on Friday, I was surprised to look at the weather and notice that we were getting close to freezing temperatures at night.

We just barely got through such a hot summer, it was interesting to see how fast it got cold. So I covered my cucumbers, peppers, and basil. Then we closed up the caterpillar tunnel and new high tunnel.

I looked at my temperature gauge in the morning and it read 34ºF. After a peek outside, I saw frost on the car and roof and in the grass but only in patches.

It seems that the ground was pretty warm so it didn’t freeze as much. I was also happy to find that all my plants were still looking really good outside the next morning when the temperatures started to rise.

Turkey Hen

At some point this week our turkey hen was up off her nest and the boys went to look at it. They said she was down to 8 eggs. The shells of some were there but there were no poults in sight.

Kian said, Mom it doesn’t look like they hatched it looked like something ate them. I went over to look and he was right, the eggs that had cracked didn’t look like they had blood vessels.

I don’t know if a predator ate the eggs or what happened. We originally thought maybe they hatched and were eaten by an owl in the night but it doesn’t seem like that’s what happened.

The hen is still sitting on the nest. Not sure what will happen, I hope some of them were incubated!

My Birthday

My birthday was last Thursday. It was a really good day, I went out on a date with Cam in the morning. When we got home, I needed to publish my video for the week so I did that.

After that, I got to relax. It was the first time in a long time I have watched a movie. I don’t get much time these days but it was so nice to sit and not feel guilty for wasting time. I also took a nap because I was up so late the night before trying to finish the video so I didn’t have to work on it on my birthday.

This is the area that they weeded.

What I asked for as a gift from Cam and the kids was service. They weeded an area in the garden for me, so I could put my feet up and rest. Service is my love language so that made my day!

Preserving

Cam decided to empty out part of one of our freezers and made some beef broth. He even canned without much help from me. It made 6 quarts.

Oh and the kids shelled a bunch of cowpeas but we haven’t made our soup with them yet. Hopefully I can get to making some next week!

We have had ducks that eat the eggs themselves, those that were not fertilized. Your turkey hen might just have needed a snack 🙂 .
